The Story About My City

Thanks to coffee, the small Patrimony Upper Cafezal, today Marilia, rapidly developed between the years 1919 and 1929.
The thorp attracted people from all parts of Brazil and the world.
In 1934, five years after its founding, the city already had a population of nearly 57,000 inhabitants.
In just over 10 years, the small town became one of the main centers of development of the state.
Like coffee, the railroad contributed greatly to this progress. The arrival of the "Paulista" attracts more and more people to the city. Thanks to the railroad gained Marilia projection.
With the crisis in coffee, cotton became the main economy of the municipality. Cultivated mainly by Japanese colony, cotton industries attracted and made Marilia the largest center of cotton products in the world 1,940 years. Some say that cotton Marília was used by the Allies in "D-Day", the famous battle of Normandy, immortalized in film by the film "Saving Private Ryan".

The City of Marília

About the ancient village of Crowthorne Indians quickly arose extensive coffee plantations that contributed to the birth of the city of Marilia. His story began when the Portuguese Antonio Pereira da Silva has acquired 60 acres of land and 20,000 coffee seedlings in 1919. Aided by his son José Pereira da Silva, he founded the village of Upper Cafezal, located in present RIVER FISH and the headwaters of the Pigeon River.
There the first houses were springing up and trade destined to supply the people came every day was growing. In 1928 the first train arrived here from Companhia Paulista de RAILWAYS, with the locomotive No. 201.
According to the scheme of Companhia Paulista Railways, the next municipality after Lácio should begin with the letter M. Then Mr. Bento de Abreu Sampaio Vidal, suggested the name MARÍLIA extracted poem MARÍLIA OF DIRCEU, poet Thomaz Antonio Gonzaga.
Sua instalação oficial deu-se a 4 de abril de 1929, portanto, foi nessa data que Marília passou a ser MUNICÍPIO.

The origin of the name of the city of Marilia

Bento de Abreu was the one who chose the name Marilia for Station of Companhia Paulista Railways which would be built here. He said in an article published in the newspaper Correio de Marilia as was the choice of the name to be given to the station, which should be in place called Upper Cafezal.  The name must start with L because the stations that were being opened were called alphabetically. Names such as Lepanto, Loanhead and Lazio were suggested. Bento de Abreu chose Lazio, but the Paulista Company decided to do another season before he received the name of Lazio and then it was necessary to choose the name for the following, which should begin with M. Marathona, Macau and Mogúncia were suggested. Bento de Abreu Sampaio Vidal found all ugly and the choice was postponed. Then, on a trip, picked up a book to read: Marilia of Dirceu, the famous poem by Thomaz Antonio Gonzaga. At the same moment he remembered the name to be chosen for the new season of Companhia Paulista Railways. The name was decided. Marilia would be the name of the station, which then went on to name the new city name.
